Dresses for Body Types: Embrace Your Features
Whether you are looking for a casual party dress or the best wedding dress for you, it’s important to understand how to embrace your natural features. There are five main different body types. While you should keep in mind that no body type is better than the others, you’ll want to dress for your body shape to make the most impact with your style. Our guide is designed to give you an overview of the different body types out there and the variety of dresses for body shapes that might suit your needs. Understanding Dress Style for Body Type As we mentioned above, there are five main body shapes – don’t worry if you don’t fit exactly into these shapes, you might have a combination of features. Simply pick the shape that is closest to your body. The main body types are: Hourglass Pear (also called triangle) Apple Athletic (also called rectangular) Inverted Triangle Each of these shapes can be flattered by a specific type of dress or style of clothing. We go into more detail below. Hourglass Hourglass shapes are defined by hips and shoulders that are equal in width with a smaller waist. Dresses that are most flattering for this body shape include deep V-necklines, more form-fitting dresses, and dresses with embellishments such as belts around the waist. Oversized, baggy, and shapeless dresses should be avoided. Pear Pear-shaped body types typically have a smaller upper body and larger hips; their shoulders will be narrower than their hip width. With this body type, it’s important to accentuate the top half of the figure with more details in the bust area of the dress or a strapless neckline. Apple Apple body shapes have smaller midsections and slim hips; they may also have wider shoulders, but the waist lacks definition. Dresses that flatter this body type include shorter dresses that highlight the legs, or dresses with embellishments around the middle to give the waist more definition. Tghter skirts with loose-fitting tops are another option that will balance out the silhouette. Athletic Athletic or rectangular figures have less definition around the waist, and the shoulders and hips are fairly even in width. Dresses that flare out to give the bottom half of the body more definition and those that have intricate or embellished necklines are the best options for this body type. Inverted Triangle The inverted triangle body shape has broader shoulders and a top half that is larger in width than the bottom half. Dresses that accentuate the bottom half of the body such as full ballgowns and longer A-line skirts will help create more definition in the waist and hips. Stay away from necklines that draw too much attention to the bust or shoulders to ensure your silhouette stays balanced. Types of Dress Shapes for Each Body Type Below, we give some examples of dresses that perfectly suit each different body type. Little Black Dress for All Style 54827 black is the perfect LBD for adding some sparkles!   The little black dress is flattering for most body types, depending on the style of dress. Individuals with apple body shapes should aim for a shorter little black dress. Those with pear shapes or athletic features should search for a style with an interesting neckline or embellishments. Hourglass figures will benefit from a clingier figure-hugging dress, and inverted triangle body shapes will look their best in a full A-line skirt. Full Ball Gown Glamour for Inverted Triangle Style 54806 is the modern cinderella ball gown in Periwinkle.   Accentuating your bottom half with a ball gown and staying away from unique neckline details help to make an inverted triangle silhouette more balanced. Off-the-Shoulder Style for Pear Style 54206 is the perfect off-the-shoulder dress.   Lots of details in the bust area or a unique neckline help to balance out the figure of pear-shaped bodies and draw attention to the bust line. Watercolor Print for Athletic Watercolor prints – styles 54270, 54290, 54319.   Ruffles, embellishments, and soft, romantic prints (like watercolor or floral options) are a great way to enhance natural athletic features and give your figure more of a rounded shape. Short and Sweet for Apple Style 54405 in Candy Pink is short, fun, and flirty. Dresses that show off the legs and those with embellishments such as belts and ribbons that highlight the waist are perfect for apple body types. Figure Hugging Style for Hourglass Style 54419 in light Blue.   Whether you’re tall and slender or shorter and replete with curves, individuals with hourglass figures will love figure-hugging styles that show off their waist and cling to their natural shape. How Do I Dress For My Body Type? The first step to dressing for your body type is to understand what exactly your body type is. Take the time to make measurements of your body and compare the shape of your figure to examples of the different body types. With careful deliberation, and some help from close friends and family, you can easily figure out what body type you have. Once you have your body type established, you can start looking at dress styles that suit your body type and other embellishments or necklines that may suit you. We recommend trying on a few different dresses in a style that suits your body shape to learn which best flatters your specific features. Confidently Embrace Your Natural Features When it comes to dressing for your body type, it can be confusing to narrow down which styles best accentuate your natural features and give you the most flattering silhouette. Keep our guide for dressing for body shapes in mind while looking for your next outfit, but also remember your own comfort. Make note that whichever style lets you feel your most confident is going to be the one that you look greatest in, regardless of whether or not it is traditionally suited to your body type. The best way you can learn how to dress cutely is by confidently wearing the clothes you feel best in. Cute Mini Dresses for Most Events Mini dresses are short and simple, and they are a great way to expand your repertoire of cute outfits. These dresses can be made from tighter, skin-hugging fabric, or looser and more flowing fabric, so you can easily find an option that makes you comfortable. You can also find mini dresses in a range of colors, patterns, and styles. Prints like florals can boost the cuteness of your look. Timeless Midi Styles for a Lower-Key Vibe Longer than the mini dress, midi styles tend to fall around the mid-thigh or just above the knee. They are suitable for most casual occasions, and they are a timeless look that can be worn again and again. Choose between tighter fabrics, flowy skirts, and different colors or patterns to find a versatile style that flatters your figure. Off-the-Shoulder Glamour for a Touch of Elegance Off-the-shoulder looks are experiencing a surge in popularity in recent years, and this look can be accompanied by any style of dress from casual to cocktail to formal. For a more formal vibe to your dress, go with a longer style.  Off-shoulder looks add a little bit of elegance and sexiness, and they can easily be accessorized with jewelry and hairstyles that make you feel your best. Backless Flair: Where Cute Meets Sultry Backless dresses add a subtle sexiness to your look, and they work well as part of a more formal or longer dress. This is a great choice if you’re hoping to look cute for a gala or an awards ceremony where you’re being honored.  This style may also be found in shirts. You can mix and match backless shirts with shorts or long pants to totally personalize this style to your tastes. Simple Slip Dresses for Casual Cuteness Made from comfortable and more flowing fabrics, slip dresses tend to be long and casual. Depending on the exact style and embellishments of your slip dress, you may be able to dress it up for a semi-formal evening out. You can also keep it casual for a fun day with your friends or a date. Colors and Prints: Where Cute Meets Eye-Catching Cute doesn’t have to be restricted to pastels and neutrals! right colors, neons, and metallics are a great way to show off your unique fashion tastes, whether you’re in a ball gown or a cocktail dress. You can combine these colors with interesting prints or graphic patterns to further show off your tastes. You can find eye-catching colors and prints on all kinds of dresses and on blouses or t-shirts, making this a versatile way to dress your best. Black Dresses for Cute Versatility A flattering black dress is just the thing to have in your closet, as this dress is often a go-to for any occasion. The Flapper Dress: 1920s Inspired Style
Flapper looks are increasingly popular, and there’s something special about the fringed details, sequins and beaded embellishments, and shorter lengths of these dresses. Whether you want to find the perfect flapper prom dress or a flapper-inspired cocktail dress for a night out on the town, our collection has what you’re looking for! 1920s Themed Dresses: Flapper Looks to Add to Your Closet This fitted sequin gown is complete with spaghetti straps, beaded details, and an embellished fringe hem. It’s a flirty cocktail length, perfect for a night out on the town visiting a popular speakeasy. Combining traditional flapper styles with a more modern fitted approach, this beaded cocktail dress features a sweetheart neckline, sequin embellishments, and a beaded fringe. It’s an elegant flapper look, and the high-slit skirt gives it an element of sexiness. Embracing hints of the 1920s, this fitted strapless dress is made with comfortable scuba fabric. It features star details, a lace-up back, and a side slit with beaded fringe embellishment, reminiscent of fringed flapper dresses. Can I Wear a Flapper Dress to Prom? A flapper prom dress is a unique way to embrace your personal style and wear an eye-catching look to prom. Flapper prom dresses can easily match the theme of your prom, even if it’s not a 1920s theme. These fun, flirty styles are typically complete with plenty of embellishments like fringe, beading, and sequins, so you’ll be sure to stand out. Great Gatsby Prom Dress Ideas The Great Gatsby takes place in the 1920s, so a flapper look would definitely fit the bill to stay on theme. Because of The Great Gatsby’s emphasis on glamour and all things extravagant, you’ll want to look for sparkling dresses and add rich accessories like opera gloves.  In The Great Gatsby, the ultra-wealthy characters are described as wearing white, flowy garments (to represent their lack of manual labor). If you want to nod to the Gatsby elite, go with a dress in white, ivory, or cream.  For more Gatsby prom look inspiration, watch the 2013 Baz Luhrmann film or the 1974 take directed by Jack Clayton. Both films will offer a plethora of ideas that suit the Gatsby aesthetic. Your Flapper Style The flapper style of the 1920s is defined by short hair, short skirts, and women who went against what was considered socially acceptable at the time, such as dancing. Today, this style is still around in more modern forms and pays tribute to the women who pioneered an entirely new look during the Roaring 20s. Embrace this 1920s style for a unique way to make a statement and look your best for any occasion. Tags:  Trending

At Sherri Hill, we have a ton of fashion milestones we’re proud of. But you can check out a hint to one of our very proudest moments below: Yep, you read that right… Kendall Jenner’s first gig was walking our #NYFW runway show! Kendall launched our Spring/Summer 2012 collection in New York Fashion Week 2011 and, yes, it was everything we hoped for. When Did Kendall Jenner Start Modeling? Kendall first started modeling when she was just 14 years old, back in 2009. But Kendall said that the day she walked down our runway in 2012, she knew modeling was what she wanted to do. To be honest, we also felt the same way. This was clearly her calling – she stole the show! Her runway show with us was the start of what became a very successful modeling career, and we are so glad we got to be a part of her journey. She slayed that runway like a boss, and we’re so proud of the supermodel he has become since then! Kendall Jenner Runway Looks In our 2012 NYF@ show, Kendall had three looks, and she made each one look even more incredible than we imagined. First up, check out how stunning she looks in this short, silver cocktail dress with a fitted body and layered fringe skirt, with an edgy, modern flapper charm. No one shone brighter than her! Next up was a gorgeous, romantic ivory cocktail dress with a feathered skirt and pearl detailing on the fitted bodice. And finally, Kendall killed it in this dramatic couture gown with a high slit (that goes all the way to her waist!) and a dramatic red skirt and gold bodysuit. Talk about breathtaking! Were All the Kardashians at Kendall Jenner’s First Runway Show? We were honored to have the whole Kardashian gang at Kendall Jenner’s first runway show! Showing off sisterly support, Khloe, Kourtney, and Kim Kardashian were right there, cheering her on! Does Kendall Jenner Still Model? After taking a few months to lay low, Kendall Jenner is back on the runway as of 2023 – and we couldn’t be happier. She brings an energy and beauty to the runway that is all her own, and we’re thrilled that she’s been so successful – and to have been a part of her story. Kendall Jenner and Sherri Hill: A Love Story We couldn’t be prouder of Kendall and everything she has accomplished! She represents so much of what we do – a timeless beauty and elegance combined with a fun, playful, and modern energy. We know we have years of Kendall on the runway ahead of us, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what she does next. Love you, Kendall – see you soon! Tags:  Trending

Shopping Guide: What Style Dress Is Best for Me?
Whether you’re shopping for your first prom, or you’re in search of a versatile, formal black tie-appropriate dress, dress shopping might be intimidating. If you need a dress but aren’t sure how to tell what style dress is best for you, we’ve got you covered with our guide! Keep the Event in Mind This is going to be the most important step when it comes to figuring out what style of dress is best for you. If you know there’s going to be a theme, you can incorporate that into the styles and accessories you look at. There aren’t many times when you get to dress to the nines dance the night away, so if you’re looking for a black-tie look (like a prom dress) you can take the opportunity to be dramatic. If you’re looking for a dress with versatility that you can wear to multiple occasions, you can’t go wrong with a chic cocktail dress. Just remember to adhere to school (or other) dress codes, especially if you’re looking at shorter dresses. Think About Your Favorite Dresses When you’re digging into your dress research, start with silhouettes that mirror dresses or outfits you already have that make you feel confident and powerful. Maybe you have a sundress with a sweetheart neckline that makes you feel like royalty, or you love how cobalt blue looks on your skin–whatever it is, let yourself be inspired. Consider Your Favorite Physical Features This usually goes hand in hand with thinking about outfits that make you feel powerful. Thinking about your favorite physical features and what you’d like to show off greatly narrows down dress silhouettes and styles. For example, if you love your legs, a short dress or a dress with a high slit will accentuate them. During this step, you can also think about looks that don’t usually work for you and filter accordingly. You want the dress to make you feel happy wearing it, so there’s no sense trying to make a style work that you already know you don’t like. Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment The most important aspect of a dress is that it makes you feel good, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look to others for inspiration and experiment! If there’s a red carpet look you’ve always wanted to emulate, why not give it a try? If your friends think you’d look stunning in a neon color you don’t normally wear, why not try it on? The worst that can happen is that you don’t like it, but then you know for sure that dress style doesn’t work for you. Finding the best dress style for you can sometimes be a bit of trial and error, but you never know unless you try! Experimenting with silhouettes, colors, and dress alternatives like two-piece sets and rompers can guide you to your new favorite dress style! Searching for Your Perfect Dress Style Finding the perfect dress (or dress alternative) can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. By keeping the event in mind, focusing on dress aspects that you already know you like, plus experimenting a little, you can figure out which dress style is best for you in no time! Tags:  Trending
