Fall 2023 ran long and short in near-equal measure, with gowns just ahead of cocktail dresses.

The shapes

Fitted led by a distance, with ball gowns behind and A-line and cape in smaller numbers. Strapless was the most common neckline, then one-shoulder, V neck and off-the-shoulder, with illusion panels on a handful. The corset bodice was the detail the season used most, the slit close behind.

Fabric and finish

Lace led, then sequin and tulle, with velvet, taffeta and jersey giving the season its heavier autumn weight. Beadwork, ruffles and prints carried the decoration, lace-up backs continued from the season before, and feathers were still in use.

Colour

Black led, red behind it, then ivory, light blue and navy, with emerald a real presence.
