Understanding the different dress codes for parties today can be confusing. If you are new to the world of fashion or trying to navigate between casual and semi-formal styles, you might not know where to start.

Fortunately, our style guide below gives you insight into some versatile dresses that may be appropriate for every occasion, semi-formal or casual. Read on to get your style inspiration.

Party Dress Code Types

Before you choose your attire, you’ll want to check the event’s dress code. This will be your guideline for what to wear and how to accessorize. Below, we get into the most common party dress codes.

White Tie/Black Tie Dress Code

These are going to be the most exclusive, formal parties. These invitations don’t come very often, so it’s a good time to go all out, especially if the event isn’t for a wedding or something else where you won’t want to steal someone’s spotlight. You’ll want to make sure that your outfit is very formal; think floor-length gowns in neutral colors and tuxedos.

Formal Dress Code Pastel Encouraged

This is becoming a more common wedding dress code, but some party throwers are also starting to use it, especially for formal parties taking place during the day or in spring. As stated, you’ll want to look for an outfit that has a heightened sense of formality (long hemline, for instance) but in a pastel color.

Pastel blue is one of the most common colors you’ll find for floor-length or tea-length gowns, but there are tons of options out there in pastel pink, yellow, green, or purple. If the party is related to a wedding, avoid going too light in hue to avoid a fashion faux pas.

Cocktail or Semi Formal Dress Code

Cocktail and semi formal are dress codes that are pretty much interchangeable and they’re the most common dress codes for parties. With one of these dress codes, you can go with a shorter skirt and more playful accessories.

Depending on the event, you may even be able to choose bold hues like red or royal blue.

Festive or Themed Dress Code

Any theme party falls under this dress code, though on some invitations it may be referred to as “festive.” To know what’s appropriate for these parties, you’ll want to look at the theme and plan accordingly. For instance, if your friend is throwing a Halloween party and asks for festive attire, you’ll want to wear a Halloween costume or another outfit that exudes Halloween vibes.

Color-Specific Dress Code

Parties that have a specific color as a theme are becoming more popular; all white parties are one of the original color-specific themes but now parties are celebrating a rainbow of colors. If the party host is throwing a color-specific party and wants you to wear that color, it will say so on the party invitation.

Casual or Come as You Are Party Dress Code

Pretty much any everyday attire is appropriate for a casual or “Come as You Are” party. Since it is a gathering, you’ll want to avoid wearing any clothing that’s stained or not in good shape, but jeans and a T-shirt are totally acceptable.

Attire Guide: Versatile Dress Styles for Every Occasion

Now that you understand the most common party dress codes, you can get to shopping! To get the most mileage out of any party dress that you add to your closet, it’s a great idea to go with a versatile look that can be dressed up or down to suit a variety of dress codes.

The following dress styles are versatile and flattering on virtually every figure type, so you can be sure that choosing one of these outfits is generally occasion-appropriate and flattering.

Simple Black Dresses

The little black dress is a style icon for a reason – this outfit is versatile, flattering, and well-suited to a number of different occasions.

You can wear your black dress out on a date night or an evening with friends, but you could also dress it up and wear it to a wedding or a family holiday gathering. No matter where you are, a black dress is sure to suit the occasion.

Printed Dresses

Colorful prints are a great choice for individuals who want some unique flair on their dress. These dresses can be great for cocktail and semi formal events, though the right print can also be a fabulous option for a festive or themed dress code.

Dresses with floral print, animal print, or geometric designs are flattering and eye-catching, and you can be sure you’ll stand out and make an entrance at any party, cocktail event, or gathering you attend.

The Strapless Look

Strapless styles are always popular and this elegant neckline is a great way to add a personal style touch to your dress. You can pair a strapless dress with elbow-length gloves for a glamorous look, or tone a more formal down a bit with a cardigan or sweater.

You can also accessorize a long or short strapless dress with jewelry, as this neckline makes a great canvas for a statement necklace or a dangly pair of earrings. It also works with a range of trendy hairstyles to enhance your overall silhouette.

Backless Dresses

Backless dresses come in a variety of colors and styles, and they may even have fun geometric or floral patterns on them.

Backless dresses can be long or short in length, and they are suited for any occasion where a semi-formal dress is required. This style tends to be flattering and allows you to add a little bit of sexiness to your look without showing too much skin. You can also cover the backless portion of your dress with a sweater if needed.

Dresses With Sparkling Embellishments

Sequin and sparkling embellishments add eye-catching style to your dress, making it a great look for every occasion. You can wear a dress with sequins or sparkles to a nightclub, a get-together with friends, a family gathering, or even a semi-formal or formal party.

You can find dresses with this embellishment in either long or short lengths and in an unlimited range of base styles and colors. Remember to go longer in length for a more formal party; you won’t want to be underdressed!

Slip Dresses

Slip dresses are crafted from thinner materials, and they tend to hang long and somewhat loose. You may find a slip dress with spaghetti straps, in a strapless style, or with a long sleeve look.

This style fits every occasion, especially if you choose a neutral color and use accessories to dress it up or down. Spaghetti straps tend to be the most versatile option, but if you know you have a lot of events you go to in colder-weather months, slip dresses with sleeves can be the perfect choice.
