Spring 2020 was built on lace. It appears in more of this season than any fabric in any season around it.

Silhouette and neckline

The season spread its volume widely: fitted led, but A-line and ball gown were close behind, and the column was a real silhouette here rather than an outlier. The two-piece was still in the range. Necklines were led by the sweetheart, then V necks, halters and strapless, so the shoulder was treated more variously than it is now.

Fabric and finish

After lace came tulle, satin, sequin and chiffon. Beadwork was heavy and widespread, the lace-up back appeared on a large share of the season, and ruching and slits ran through the fitted styles.

Colour

Black and red led, with light blue, yellow and ivory behind them and navy after.
